Requirement

As a designer himself this gentlemen not only appreciated the importance of attention to detail and quality but also the design freedom to create something unique within the confines of the space available, fulfilling a number of functional requirements as well as aesthetic aspirations. This impressive studio was to provide office space, a fabulous little green house area for the children to pot and grow plants, plus a sizeable storage area. Fundamentally the studio had to accommodate the stunning tree that dominated the bottom of the garden with its artistic near symmetrical boughs.

Summary

We met with our client on site to look at the area and discuss his requirements. Whilst still on site our designer created a 3D model using architectural software, so that the client could envisage what had been discussed. He loved the design which included all the functional elements mentioned as well as a courtyard area around the tree, emphasising it as the central feature. Naturally there were many subtle iterations of this original design as the detail was drilled down but in essence the concept and layout was unchanged. One of the many key elements of this design was the ability to create a seamless indoor outdoor feel to the office area. To that end a floating corner was created by the meeting of the two panelled bi folding door at the side with the sliding doors across the front. Although the runners for sliding doors and bi folds have different profiles our skilled fitters ensured the transition from decking to internal floor was also uniform and seamless. The 15m2 storage area lay to the rear on the left side, accessible from the inner courtyard, through a door clad to blend beautifully with the rest of the courtyard walls. The children’s area (front left) was accessible from this storage room via a space-saving sliding door. In contrast to most of our studios the decked area was tiled. These tiles, though fitted by us, were provided by the client and tied in with the existing garden path and patio. Other features of this bespoke studio included touch screen thermostatically controlled underfloor heating, a Hitachi Shirokuma A+ energy efficient climate control unit, RAL colour coded aluminium frames, 10 double power sockets in brushed chrome, 12 internal and 7 external LED down lighters and a four channel remote light control system. Access for this build was through the house, including the many tonnes of cement required for the foundations of the tiled areas. As the photographs show, the walls were expertly built very close to the boundary to maximise internal space but the overall height it did not exceed 2.5m height, so planning was not required.
